What is the V-T3 Project?

Welcome to the BEST/VCC Veterans Train-the-Trainer (V-T3) project. Our goal is to is to establish a nationwide pilot train-the-trainer program. Trainers will learn to help Veterans with traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress to learn and use specialized apps, strategies, and trainings in order to develop a structure they can count on to re-establish a sense of normalcy and improved quality of life post injury.

The BEST model integrates specific app and cognitive skills training in an anytime, anywhere environment to empower participants to achieve both personal and professional goals and increase everyday success. This online hub will help establish an online community that learns and shares together.

What we plan to accomplish

  1. Implement a train-the-trainer program. Trainers will learn to teach Veterans with TBI, PTSD, and/or other conditions that affect the brain how to use the BEST Suite to increase cognitive and coping skills.
  2. Establish an online collaborative hub using Slack and Zoom for participants to connect with trainers and other participants.
  3. Establish a series of webinars to encourage and maintain participation.
  4. Track quality of life changes expressed by project participants including personal, school, and work-related changes.

Why this project matters

TBI/PTSD are signature medical conditions associated with Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF). Although each condition has its unique challenges, they can share issues in multiple realms:

  • behavioral
  • physical
  • cognitive

The behavioral and physical challenges of injury are often more “visible” and thus get addressed first and foremost. As a result, any ongoing cognitive issues related to executive function (e.g., organization, time management, decision making, self-regulation, etc.) can be overlooked and may result in poor initiation, loss of structure, and/or decreased self-confidence and self-esteem. These cognitive challenges can significantly impact a person’s ability to successfully maintain a job, go to school, and/or perform necessary responsibilities at home.

How to get involved

The V-T3 project involves two levels of trainers:

  • Coordinators (2)
    • Learn all apps within the BEST Suite
    • Identify five potential mentors
    • Assist mentors in finding Veteran participants
    • Support mentors in their training efforts
    • Coordinate survey delivery and tracking
  • Guides/Mentors (10)
    • Learn all apps within the BEST Suite
    • Select two of the BEST Suite apps to master
    • Train 5-10 Veterans in the use of two BEST Suite apps
    • Support Veteran participants as they learn the apps

What you need to do to be a guide/mentor

Individuals interested in being trainers are asked to:

  1. Complete an online application
  2. Complete all project-related online courses
  3. Participate in several live and recorded webinars
  4. Pass a functional assessment for each of the BEST Suite apps
  5. Demonstrate ability to effectively train end users
  6. Identify and train 5-10 Veterans in the benefits and use of at least two apps within the BEST Suite

Online Trainings

Trainers will complete the following trainings (10-12 hours total):

  • Introduction to BI/PTSD (~30 minutes)
  • Introduction to Cognitive Rehabilitation (~1 hour)
  • BEST Suite
    • Overview (~ 45 minutes)
    • PaceMyDay (~ 90 minutes)
    • ReachMyGoals (~ 90 minutes)
    • StrategizeMyLife (~ 45 minutes)
    • CompleteMyToDos (~ 60 minutes)

BEST Suite Mastery Assessment & Training Skills

Trainers will pass the BEST Suite Mastery assessment with 80% accuracy and demonstrate the ability to train and troubleshoot a variety of participant-related challenges associated with learning the BEST Suite app.

Train Veteran Trainees in Two BEST Suite Apps

Trainers are responsible for providing training and support for five-ten participants in two of the four BEST Suite apps. All Veteran trainees will take an online functional assessment to identify which app within the BEST Suite will be most beneficial, based on their self-reported cognitive challenges. Beginning with the app identified to be the most helpful will allow participants to see immediate relevance in their lives, resulting in better compliance.
